One Tank, One Woman: Empowering Catherine Kagendo Kinyiri and Her Community
We are proud to announce that Catherine Kagendo Kinyiri, a devoted wife and mother of six, has received the first water tank as part of the One Tank, One Woman project. As the primary caregiver of her family, Catherine has shown incredible strength and resilience in the face of many challenges.
Forced from her land due to a boundary dispute, Catherine now lives in Moroni among other internally displaced people (IDPs). This 5,000-liter water tank is doing more than providing clean water to her household; it’s also serving over 30 women and their families in the IDP community. For these women, access to clean water means improved health, reliable domestic water supplies, and the ability to grow crops like mango trees for future food security.
The Benefits of Clean Water for Rural Women and Families in Kenya:
- Access to clean water significantly reduces waterborne diseases, which account for nearly 80% of Kenya’s preventable illnesses (UNICEF, 2023).
- In rural areas, women and girls spend an average of 4–6 hours each day fetching water. This tank has already saved time for over 30 women in Moroni, empowering them to focus on education, work, and community development (World Bank, 2022).
- Clean water access is essential for breaking cycles of poverty, as it frees women to pursue income-generating opportunities, increases school attendance for children, and fosters food security through small-scale farming (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, 2021).
